Recycling copper metal is a great way to not only earn money but also help the environment. However, before you head off to a local metal recycling center, you will need to get your hands on this precious metal. If you have never recycled copper before, you may be a little clueless as to where you can find copper recycling materials. Believe it or not, copper is all around your home, which means you do not have to look very far or hard. Keep reading to learn a few places you can find copper metal scraps.
Electronics
Almost any electronic that you have in your home is going to have some copper in it. Old computers can be scrapped for metal materials and parts. As far as copper goes, you will want to pay close attention to the chips and circuit board, as these generally have copper in them. Computer monitors and TVs, in addition to the cords and adapters, will have some small traces of coppers in them as well. Don't forget to check old VCRs and DVD players. For newer electronics, you can likely find some insulated copper wires in handheld gaming devices and cell phones. However, before going this route, make sure that these electronics can't be repaired or sold for a higher price broken.
Plumbing
If you are planning on renovating your home and the renovation consists of replacing your old plumbing system with a new one, you should consider checking to see what type of plumbing pipes are currently in your home. If you have an older home, there is a good chance that your existing plumbing system is made out of copper. By recycling these copper pipes, you can bring in a decent amount of money.
Household Appliances
Larger appliances that are used throughout the home are generally equipped with relatively thick insulated copper wires. These appliances consist of refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, washers, dryers, and air conditioners. The older that these items are, the better off you are going to be in being able to get more copper out of them. Consider driving around town and seeing if anyone has placed any old appliances out by the curb for pick-up. If so, see it's alright to take it off for them. Also, don't assume you won't be able to get some copper wiring out off some of the smaller household appliances like coffee makers and blenders, as they have them as well.
